The˜Feast˜of˜the˜Holy˜Cross˜ 49
is dedicated to the finding of the true Holy Cross, on which the Savior was crucified.
Mother of Emperor Constantine, Equal-to-the-Apostles Elena, went to Jerusalem to find
the places connected with the earthly life of Jesus Christ, and it is her that is honored with
the discovery of the Holy Cross. In the center of the icon composition on the podium
is the Cross held by Macarius, Bishop of Jerusalem. On two sides the heavy cross is
supported by two clerics. The bishop’s hands are drawn in such a way that it seems that
he is starting to raise the Cross or is already lowering it. This is due to the fact that after
the discovery of the Cross, the Bishop shows it to all those present, by blessing them.
In the background we see the Jerusalem Temple, symbolizing the Heavenly Jerusalem.
To the left and to the right of the Bishop are the figures of the Equal-to-the-Apostles
Constantine and Elena, prayerfully holding out their hands to the Cross.
Праздник Крестовоздвижения посвящен обретению Креста, на котором был
распят Спаситель. Мать императора Константина, равноапостольная
Елена, отправилась в Иерусалим, чтобы отыскать места, связанные с зем-
ной жизнью Иисуса Христа, и именно ей принадлежит честь обретения свя-
того Креста. В центре композиции иконы на возвышении находится крест
и держащий его иерусалимский святитель Макарий. С двух сторон тяжелый
крест поддерживают два священнослужителя. Руки епископа
нарисованы таким образом, что создается впечатление, буд-
то он начинает поднимать Крест либо уже его опускает.
Это связано с тем, что после обретения Креста епископ
показывает его всем присутствующим, благословляя
их. На заднем плане виден Иерусалимский храм, сим-
волизирующий Небесный Иерусалим. Слева и справа
от епископа расположены фигуры равноапостольного
Константина и равноапостольной Елены, молитвенно
протягивающей руки к Кресту.
