On the icon, one of the Twelve Feast days, the
consecration of the Virgin Mary is shown to God by
the vow of Her parents, the holy and righteous Joachim
and Anna. is solemn event occurred when Mary
was three years old. e Parents led their daughter to
the temple, where she was met by virgin maidens with
lighted lamps. e compositionally semantic center of
the icon is shi ed to the right, where the high priest
leans towards the small gure of the Virgin. According
to the Tradition of the Church, this is the righteous
Zechariah, the future father of St. John the Baptist.
Despite the small size of the Virgin, she is dressed in
a maforium (a long woman’s veil, boards, going down
from head to •oor) - the traditional women’s clothing
of married women. On the le , the righteous Joachim
and Anna bow in prayerful obeisance, and behind
them the virgin girls are depicted. us the high priest,
the parents, and the virgins all bow before the One
who is destined to become the Mother of the Savior of
mankind. In the right upper corner of the icon there
is a sitting Holy Mother of God, to whom the angel of
God brings Bread of Heaven. A special role in the plot
is played by the Jerusalem temple with open gates in the

is the most famous prophet of the pre-Christian era, 51
St.˜Elijah˜ who lived in Palestine for nine centuries before the
Savior’s Nativity. Elijah is one of the two Old Testament saints who did not see
death on earth, but was awarded paradise even before the coming of Jesus Christ.
The multi-composition of this icon depicts the Prophet, sitting in the background
of his cave. Life scenes show the awakening of the sleeping Prophet by an Angel,
chariot of fire and horses of fire appear and Elijah is lifted up in a whirlwind to
Heaven directly to the Lord of hosts that meets him. In the upper right corner is
his disciple Elisha, who receives the mantle of the Prophet. The masterpiece is
executed in bright lively colors which create a unique depiction of the Prophet.
Святой Илия, самый известный пророк дохристиан-
ской эпохи, живший в Палестине за девять веков до Рож-
дества Спасителя. Илия – один из двух ветхозаветных
святых, не увидевших смерти на земле, но удостоенных
рая еще до прихода Иисуса Христа. Многосюжетная компо-
зиция иконы представляет Пророка, сидящего на фоне пеще-
ры. Сцены из его жития рассказывают о пробуждении Ангелом
спящего Пророка, вознесении Пророка на огненной колеснице
на небо, прямо к встречающему его Богу Саваофу. В правом
верхнем углу изображен его ученик Елисей, получающий оде-
жду Пророка. Яркие сочные краски создают неповторимый
