e icon of St. John, the Prophet
Forerunner and Baptizer of our Lord, is
represented in the composition of the Deesis,
the dogmatic meaning of which is the prayer of
a mediator as intercession for the human race.
John the Baptist is depicted by leaning towards
Christ in prayer for the souls of sinners. John
the Baptist delivers a blessing and holds a scroll
which begins “I saw and witnessed concerning
him, behold the Lamb of God…”.

В Евангелии ничего не сказано о земной жизни
Богоматери после Вознесения Спасителя. Све-
дения о Ее последних днях сохранило церковное
предание. Именно поэтому иконографическими
источниками для образов Успения в Византии,
на Балканах и в Древней Руси являлись широко
распространенные апокрифические сказания.
Общая композиция иконы традиционна для
искусства Византии и Древней Руси. Согласно
традиции, Успение представлено как событие,
происходящее в доме Иоанна Богослова в Иеру-
салиме – в Сионской горнице, где ранее произо-
шло Сошествие Святого Духа на апостолов.
Богоматерь изображена в центре на ложе, по
сторонам от Нее – плачущие апостолы, за ло-
жем стоит Спаситель с душой Богоматери,
изображаемой в виде спеленатого младенца.
Небесные силы, сопровождающие Христа, пред-
ставлены одним шестикрылым серафимом. За
апостолами стоят четыре епископа с ним-
бами. Это св. Иаков, «брат Божий», первый
епископ Иерусалимский, и три ученика апо-
столов: Тимофей, Иерофей и Дионисий Ареопа-
гит, сопровождающий св. апостола Павла. На
заднем плане две женские фигуры изображают
верующих Иерусалима, составляющих вместе

anything about Bartholomew apart
from the other apostles. Filled with the
Holy Spirit on the fiftieth day of the
Passover, he, like the other disciples
of Jesus Christ, became a preacher of
the Word of God. Information about
his apostolic ministry remained
in the apocryphal texts: he turned
the Gentiles in Asia, Mesopotamia,
Parthia (Persia) and India to Christ.

In the Gospels nothing is said about the earthly
life of the Mother of God a er the Ascension of
the Savior. Information about Her last days are
preserved by church tradition. For this reason,
the iconographic sources of the images of the
Dormition˜
in Byzantium, the Balkans and in Ancient Rus(sia)
were widespread apocryphal legends. e general
composition of the icon is traditional for the art
of Byzantium and Ancient Rus. According to
tradition, the Assumption is represented as an event
taking place in the house of John the eologian in
Jerusalem - in the Zion chamber, where the Holy
Spirit descended on the Apostles. e Mother of
God is depicted in the center on a bed, on the sides
of Her are the weeping apostles, behind the bed
stands the Savior with the soul of the Mother of
God, represented as a swaddled baby. e heavenly
powers accompanying Christ are represented by one
six-winged seraphim. Behind the apostles are four
bishops with nimbuses: Jacob, «brother of God,» the
rst bishop of Jerusalem, and three disciples of the
apostles: Timothy, Hierophheus and Dionysius the
Areopagite accompanying the Apostle Paul. In the
background, two female gures depict the believers
of Jerusalem, who together with the apostles and
bishops constitute the inner circle of the Church,
in which the mystery of the Assumption of
the Mother of God takes place. e bed

otherwise called the Baptism of the Lord, as on that
day the Church recalls the baptism of the Savior
from John the Baptist in the Jordan River. e
holiday was called the Epiphany because during the
baptism of Jesus Christ there was a manifestation
of all three Persons of the Divine and Holy Trinity:
the Father spoke with a voice from heaven, and the
Holy Spirit descended on Jesus Christ in the form
of a dove, con rming the words of the Father. In
the center of the icon
composition Christ is depicted a naked in the waters of
the Jordan. Above the Savior standing in the water is a
segment of the sky from which the dove descends to
Christ - the symbol of the Holy Spirit and the rays of
the «triune light.» On the le side of the composition,
John the Baptist lays the right hand on the head of
Christ. On the right side, the three angels bow to Christ.

Apostle Philip preached the Word of God in Galilee
in Greece, in Syria, Asia Minor, in Arabia, Ethiopia
and Phrygia, accompanying the preaching with
miracles. On the orders of the ruler of the city
of Hierapolis of Phrygia, the apostle received
martyrdom on the cross.
Prayer to the Apostle Philip has a miraculous
power. The faithful pray to the Apostle in the
fight against the passions and temptations,
in the search for truth, God-pleasing life
and ridding one of premature death without
repentance and the acceptance of the holy
sacrament.
