first wife and therefore in the
Gospel is called the brother of
the Lord. According to legend,
our Lord Jesus Christ appeared
to him after his resurrection
and appointed him bishop of the
Jerusalem church. The apostle James
did not travel to preach in different
countries, like the other apostles, but he
taught and ministered in Jerusalem. While
serving as the Bishop of Jerusalem for about
30 years, he extended and established the holy faith
in Jerusalem and throughout Palestine. Church
tradition attributes the composition of the oldest
rite of the Divine Liturgy to the Apostle James.

a tax collector but then believed in Christ.
The apostle James after the Ascension of
Jesus Christ began to read the sermons
in Judea, and then, together with the
apostle Andrew, went to Edessa. There,
they were divided, and the apostle
James went to preach to South Palestine,
to Eleutferopol and Gaza. The apostle
was crucified on the cross in the city of
Ostrazin, when he was going to read the
sermons in Egypt.

e Gospels of Matthew and Mark recount the death of the Forerunner of the Lord on the
32nd year of the Nativity of Christ. For the terrible denunciation of King Herod that he,
heaving le his own wife, lives with his brother’s wife Herodias, John the Baptist is thrown
into prison. As a reward for the dance, Herodias teaches her daughter to ask for the
severed head of John the Baptist on a platter. e central part of the icon is the
image of the warrior of King Herod Antipas, who swings his sword on the

declined gure of the prophet John. In the right part of the icon is depicted a
warrior who presents the maiden head of the prophet to Salome. e honorable
head is surrounded by a halo - as a symbol of the fact that the prophet of God
through his ministry and martyrdom has acquired the Kingdom of God and the
Lord’s grace. At the top of the icon is the image of the Face of Jesus Christ Himself.
